How Sweet it is: Domino Park, New York’s Waterfront Wonderland
September 25th, 2019
About the Event
Join the DLFNY for this year’s season opener – with a spoonful of sugar and a side helping of groundbreaking and truly innovative urban landscape design!
Domino Park is a brand-new 6-acre public park on the edge of the former Domino Sugar refinery in Williamsburg, looking out across the East River and to the spectacular Manhattan skyline. The park has redefined how both Brooklynites and visitors connect with the waterfront in this once industrial part of Brooklyn, without turning its back on its heritage. In its heyday the factory was one of the largest and most productive refineries in the world – producing up to 98% of the sugar consumed in the United States, and the park serves as a memorial to the thousands of lives it touched throughout its 160 year history before finally closing in 2004.
Together with Steven Espinoza of Lighting Workshop, we will explore the lighting design behind the unique features that make up this waterfront wonderland – taking in cranes, playgrounds, cooling towers, a 5-block long elevated walkway, dancing water features and salvaged remnants from the factory itself.
