NYC Icons: Bryant Park and The New York Public Library

For its 100th birthday, the New York Public Library gave itself a major exterior renovation which entailed cleaning the marble exterior and restoring all architectural and sculptural marble details. To honor that effort, the library decided to light the new exterior. Claude Engel set out to light as much of the façade from as few positions possible. He also wanted the lights to be as invisible as possible. This required that lights be integrated into existing light poles along 5th Avenue, 40th Street and 42nd Street, necessitating permission from four separate neighborhood authorities. Because a minimum of lighting positions were used, the focusing was complicated. Mr. Engel had the honor of lighting the two lions, Patience & Fortitude, who had never been lighted before, except for in the movies.

The Drew Barrymore Show

You’ve seen her on the silver screen where she was in everything from ET to the Santa Clarita Diet, but what does it take to light a hit daytime TV talk show for actress Drew Barrymore?

Join us on set with lighting director Shawn Kaufman April 26th at 1:30pm for a taping of the DREW Barrymore show and see how architectural lighting and film lighting converge. From recessed fixtures and cove lighting to LED tape, these elements combine to create a warm home interior to a tv news set with a flexibility that only exists on a television set. Discuss the control system, color temperature, and successes and challenges that exist with a tv lighting system.

Moynihan Train Hall
Walking Tour

When it opened in 1914, this grand landmark, designed by McKim, Mead & White, was NYC’s primary USPS facility. Its conversion to the Moynihan Train Hall, a generation in the making, is an instant new landmark. This major transportation hub, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill with lighting designers Domingo Gonzalez Associates, is the embodiment of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together in a partnership.

From darkness into light: this former postal facility, shrouded since WWII, beckons travelers into spacious daylit volumes and where, at night, color comes out to play. The hall’s massive trusses, preserved from the original design, contained skylights covered over during World War II. For the conversion, the roof was removed and replaced with a spectacular vaulted skylight consisting of 3,160 panels spanning over more than an acre and flooding the hall with natural light. During the day the station’s airy elegance is evident; at night the lighting artistry reveals itself celebrating and highlighting the historic trusses and is employed to enliven important events and holidays: art and function in perfect balance.

Linear lighting frames the skylights and continuously adapts to the intensity and color temperature of natural light. Subtle as daylight fades, bold colors celebrate the trusses and purlins. At night, the lighting strategy retains the sense of transparency created by the skylight. Lighting the facades that bound the skylight was a critical element in reinforcing that transparency.

Join us for a walking tour with a description of the design process and strategies led by the lighting design team at Domingo Gonzalez Associates. After the tour, we’ll cap the spectacular evening at Tir Na Nog Irish Bar with small bites and drinks.

Walking tour 5:30 – 6:30pm (31st Street and 8th Avenue entrance)
Cocktails and lite bites 6:30-8:00pm (Tir Na Nog Irish Bar and Grill, 254 West 31st Street)

Stadium Lighting: More Than Just The Field

There is a growing trend in sports hospitality that places emphasis on the guest experience and the celebration of the community and locale. As stadiums evolve, their focus extends beyond the field to luxury interior stadium spaces and to the entertainment districts around them. Stadiums are no longer just for game days, with certain areas now open 365 days a year.

We will review the context, design, and development of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California and Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. While these stadiums have different aesthetics, budgets, and timelines, their core needs remain similar. Deliver a super-scale project on time for the associated sport’s pre-season opening events, and keep it under budget. Provide scalable design solutions for repetitive environments, while creating unique design experiences for each club and luxury area. Consider the end users’ journey through the stadium on both game and non-game days, and enhance memorable views and ‘Instagrammable’ moments along the way.

We will also address the challenges navigated while completing projects of this scale during an international pandemic and lockdown, and the complexities of designing buildings and programs intended for mass gatherings and public displays of face and body paint.
