SUMMARY:Light and Magic!
DESCRIPTION:Our season kick-off is also our annual Theater Benefit event\, and this year’s event will be like no other we’ve attended: the world premiere of Cirque de Soleil’s Zarkana. Staged at the iconic Radio City Music Hall\, Zarkana is “an acrobatic rock opera that blends circus arts with the surreal to create a world where physical virtuosity rubs shoulders with the strange.” Following the glowingly praised production\, DLFNY attendees will be treated to an exclusive post-show discussion with the show’s lighting designer\, Alain Lortie\, who will discuss the lighting opportunities and challenges in capturing this physically dynamic performance on the grand stage of Radio City. \nA portion of each ticket will go to benefit the DLFNY Lighting Education Initiative. The Initiative supports the lighting programs of New York City’s educational institutions as well as the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education.

SUMMARY:LightMappingNYC: Walking Tour of the High Line
DESCRIPTION:LightMappingNYC is intended to provide the New York City lighting design community with a forum to consider the current\, past and future conditions of their urban environment at night. By combining the local / national interest in this topic generated by the IESNYC/DLFNY Lights Camera Walk map with the global scope of PLDA’s Lightmapping initiative\, this program will underscore the vital role of lighting design in making of New York City after dark. \nThe multi-part program will include a tour of a significant new lighting installation\, interactive group walks in the city at night\, and a group discussion / reception. Attendees will be encouraged to join multiple program parts\, but are also welcome to choose what best fits their interest / schedule. All events are free to the public\, but require registration. Space is limited and registration will be on a first come first served basis. All events will take place as scheduled\, rain or shine. \nThe 2009 LightmappingNYC program is a component of the PLDA’s global Lightmapping project. Previous PLDA LightMapping events took place in Rome\, Italy in May 2008 and London UK in September 2008. LightmappingNYC is the first PLDA LightMapping event to take place in North America. \nLighting Design by L’Observatoire International. \n  \n*all photos copyrighted and not for use without prior arrangement
