SUMMARY:The Woolworth Tower Residences: A Landmark in Living
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY for an unforgettable virtual tour of the exquisite\, newly completed Woolworth Tower Residences and the relighting of the iconic tower. \nThe Woolworth Tower is a National Historic Landmark and has been an icon of the New York skyline since its completion in 1913 when\, at the time\, it was the world’s tallest building and unprecedented in both size and sophistication. Under the masterful direction of architect Thierry Despont with lighting design by SCHWINGHAMMER\, the top 30 floors of the tower have been reimagined as a stunning series of 33 luxury condominiums that embody the style and timeless elegance that we associate with the building. The interiors are complemented by an equally impressive relighting of the magnificent terra cotta facade\, revealing the building’s exquisite original details. \nStan Ponte of Sotheby’s will take us on a virtual tour of the exquisite $30 million “Pavilion A” apartment followed by a fascinating walk-through and discussion of the exterior lighting led by the SCHWINGHAMMER team. The evening will conclude with a live Q&A with SCHWINGHAMMER.

SUMMARY:Sustainable by Necessity: Daylighting a Remote School in Zambia
DESCRIPTION:In the harsh sun of the African savanna\, the Mwabwindo School had to be lit primarily by daylight because electricity was unreliable. Renfro Design Group’s award-winning solution utilizes inventive architectural interventions to harvest the more reliable light source. Informed by extensive daylight studies\, their design employs a handmade perforated brick wall to brighten corridors and bring daylight into the classrooms in conjunction with other elements including a dramatic center canopy with voids directing the sunlight. \nThe result\, despite the difficult conditions and limited budget\, is a learning environment that is not only comfortable but also friendly and stimulating. In its success\, the school has become a gathering area for the community. \nJoin us for a virtual tour and presentation followed by a Q&A with the designers.

SUMMARY:TWA Terminal and Hotel: Saarinen's Masterpiece Revived
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY and IESNYC for an exciting evening. \nEero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK\, which epitomized the Jet Age\, and lay vacant since 2001\, reopened to the public on May 15\, 2019 as the highly anticipated TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport. Beyer Blinder Belle (BBB) played a central role in creating a second life for the historic building and as project and preservation architect\, restored and transformed the structure for MCR Development. One Lux Studio designed the lighting for what was the Flight Center and is now the hotel’s reception space in addition to the building exteriors\, being faithful to preserving Saarinen’s design\, while using updated fixtures. Flanking the terminal are the hotel’s two new wings\, designed by Lubrano Ciavarra with Stonehill Taylor providing the interior design for the guest rooms and lobbies. Below grade is a conference center\, designed by INC Architecture & Design\, that contains a a banquet hall and multiple meeting rooms. \nCooley Monato Studio designed the lighting for both the hotel and the event spaces\, keeping the spirit of ’60 alive for our modern age. The lighting designers from One Lux and Cooley Monato Studio will take the guests of the IESNYC and DLFNY on a tour of the restored and new spaces of one of New York’s iconic and much beloved buildings demonstrating how lighting contributed to this significant project.

SUMMARY:How Sweet it is: Domino Park\, New York's Waterfront Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY for this year’s season opener – with a spoonful of sugar and a side helping of groundbreaking and truly innovative urban landscape design! \nDomino Park is a brand-new 6-acre public park on the edge of the former Domino Sugar refinery in Williamsburg\, looking out across the East River and to the spectacular Manhattan skyline. The park has redefined how both Brooklynites and visitors connect with the waterfront in this once industrial part of Brooklyn\, without turning its back on its heritage. In its heyday the factory was one of the largest and most productive refineries in the world – producing up to 98% of the sugar consumed in the United States\, and the park serves as a memorial to the thousands of lives it touched throughout its 160 year history before finally closing in 2004. \nTogether with Steven Espinoza of Lighting Workshop\, we will explore the lighting design behind the unique features that make up this waterfront wonderland – taking in cranes\, playgrounds\, cooling towers\, a 5-block long elevated walkway\, dancing water features and salvaged remnants from the factory itself.

SUMMARY:A Tour of the Iconic Kings Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY for a presentation and backstage tour of the storied and recently restored Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. \nUpon its inception in 1929\, the Loew’s Kings Theatre was one of the most exquisite theatres in the nation. Originally designed by architectural masters Rapp & Rapp with interior design by Harold W. Rambusch\, the theatre was truly an ornate spectacle for the masses. \nIn 2013\, Martinez + Johnson Architecture\, based in Washington\, D.C.\, was selected as the architectural firm for the ineffable restoration project. Today\, the $95 million project features an authentic restoration of the 1929 design. Along with a recreation of the historic lighting fixtures\, the original plaster and painting schemes have been restored\, and vintage carpet and seating have been reproduced. The restoration of this former movie palace marks the rebirth of an historic venue into a state-of-the-art performance space.

SUMMARY:85 Broad: Lighting a Public Space Experience
DESCRIPTION:When you arrive at 85 Broad\, proceed to the building security desk to sign in. From there\, you’ll be directed to the LPQ cafe in the lower level.
