SUMMARY:NYC Icons: Bryant Park and The New York Public Library
DESCRIPTION:For its 100th birthday\, the New York Public Library gave itself a major exterior renovation which entailed cleaning the marble exterior and restoring all architectural and sculptural marble details. To honor that effort\, the library decided to light the new exterior. Claude Engel set out to light as much of the façade from as few positions possible. He also wanted the lights to be as invisible as possible. This required that lights be integrated into existing light poles along 5th Avenue\, 40th Street and 42nd Street\, necessitating permission from four separate neighborhood authorities. Because a minimum of lighting positions were used\, the focusing was complicated. Mr. Engel had the honor of lighting the two lions\, Patience & Fortitude\, who had never been lighted before\, except for in the movies.

SUMMARY:Moynihan Train Hall Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:When it opened in 1914\, this grand landmark\, designed by McKim\, Mead & White\, was NYC’s primary USPS facility. Its conversion to the Moynihan Train Hall\, a generation in the making\, is an instant new landmark. This major transportation hub\, designed by Skidmore\, Owings and Merrill with lighting designers Domingo Gonzalez Associates\, is the embodiment of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together in a partnership. \nFrom darkness into light: this former postal facility\, shrouded since WWII\, beckons travelers into spacious daylit volumes and where\, at night\, color comes out to play. The hall’s massive trusses\, preserved from the original design\, contained skylights covered over during World War II. For the conversion\, the roof was removed and replaced with a spectacular vaulted skylight consisting of 3\,160 panels spanning over more than an acre and flooding the hall with natural light. During the day the station’s airy elegance is evident; at night the lighting artistry reveals itself celebrating and highlighting the historic trusses and is employed to enliven important events and holidays: art and function in perfect balance. \nLinear lighting frames the skylights and continuously adapts to the intensity and color temperature of natural light. Subtle as daylight fades\, bold colors celebrate the trusses and purlins. At night\, the lighting strategy retains the sense of transparency created by the skylight. Lighting the facades that bound the skylight was a critical element in reinforcing that transparency. \nJoin us for a walking tour with a description of the design process and strategies led by the lighting design team at Domingo Gonzalez Associates. After the tour\, we’ll cap the spectacular evening at Tir Na Nog Irish Bar with small bites and drinks. \nWalking tour 5:30 – 6:30pm (31st Street and 8th Avenue entrance)\nCocktails and lite bites 6:30-8:00pm (Tir Na Nog Irish Bar and Grill\, 254 West 31st Street)

SUMMARY:Stadium Lighting: More Than Just The Field
DESCRIPTION:There is a growing trend in sports hospitality that places emphasis on the guest experience and the celebration of the community and locale. As stadiums evolve\, their focus extends beyond the field to luxury interior stadium spaces and to the entertainment districts around them. Stadiums are no longer just for game days\, with certain areas now open 365 days a year. \nWe will review the context\, design\, and development of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles\, California and Globe Life Field in Arlington\, Texas. While these stadiums have different aesthetics\, budgets\, and timelines\, their core needs remain similar. Deliver a super-scale project on time for the associated sport’s pre-season opening events\, and keep it under budget. Provide scalable design solutions for repetitive environments\, while creating unique design experiences for each club and luxury area. Consider the end users’ journey through the stadium on both game and non-game days\, and enhance memorable views and ‘Instagrammable’ moments along the way. \nWe will also address the challenges navigated while completing projects of this scale during an international pandemic and lockdown\, and the complexities of designing buildings and programs intended for mass gatherings and public displays of face and body paint.

SUMMARY:A Fairytale in the Park: The Re-Lighting of Belvedere Castle
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY\, Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design and the Central Park Conservancy for this year’s season opener as we celebrate being back together in-person\, for a very special program right in the heart of New York’s Central Park. \nBelvedere Castle was opened to the public in 1869 as part of Frederick Olmstead and Calvert Vaux’s original Central Park masterplan. The word ‘Belvedere’ derives from the Italian for ‘beautiful view’\, and the castle was envisioned as a location to take in the beautiful sweeping vistas of Central Park. Perched upon the park’s second highest land mass\, the castle can be viewed from many vantage points\, and the recent $12 million renovation has restored this incredible historic structure back to its original glory and renewed its sense of place inside the park. \nTogether with Michael Hennes of Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design\, and Denise Keaveney from the Central Park Conservancy\, we will explore both the interior and exterior of the castle\, learning about the design challenges associated with re-lighting such a unique structure. \nThe event will commence at the nearby Loeb Boathouse for a reception of drinks and light refreshments\, prior to the tour commencing. Join us for what is sure to be a magical night! \nDLFNY would like to ensure the safety for all of our attending guests and speakers. Please note the following Covid-19 protocols\, per New York City guidelines: \nPer the New York City mandate for indoor dining at restaurants\, proof of Covid-19 vaccination will be required to access the pre-event drinks reception at the Loeb Boathouse. \nMasks must also be worn at all times during the interior portion of the tour. \nNote: To manage capacity due to venue restrictions and COVID precautions\, this is a members-only event.

SUMMARY:The Frick Collection: Under a New Light
DESCRIPTION:DLFNY’s 2020-2021 presenters and student guests were invited to experience the beloved holdings of The Frick Collection reframed in a completely new context and under a new light. Serving as the Frick’s temporary home while its historic buildings at One East 70th Street undergo renovation\, Frick Madison marks the first time that pieces from their collection have been presented outside the walls of the museum’s Gilded Age mansion. \nOur guests learned about Anita Jorgensen Lighting Design’s approach to lighting the collection\, which was newly installed in Marcel Breuer’s minimalist building\, as she guided them through galleries while discussing the challenges involved. Their tour format included a brief tabletop hands-on discussion about the components of the landmarked 1960’s lighting system and how it was brought up to 21st century technology standards while adhering to museum conservation standards. \nAnita Jorgensen\, IESNA\, IALD\, LEED\, LC – Anita Jorgensen Lighting Design (AJLD)\nAnita’s background in art history and theatrical lighting design brings a strong sense of aesthetics and drama to her lighting approach. Anita’s firm works on a broad range of project types\, such as museums\, libraries\, special exhibitions\, research laboratories\, art studios\, and corporate interiors. Her hands-on experience gained from extensive exhibition lighting design work translates into lighting designs which create magic while being mindful of durability\, ease of maintenance\, and long-term flexibility.

Members can disconnect from the stressful norms of society and engage with like-minded members to recenter\, reengage\, and work together toward achieving their personal best. \nThe building blends quintessential southern charm and modern architectural details in a structure that fits naturally into its surroundings. The free-flowing transitions between spaces marries old and new\, while emphasizing the connection members have between their own well-being and the adjoining community.

SUMMARY:The Woolworth Tower Residences: A Landmark in Living
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY for an unforgettable virtual tour of the exquisite\, newly completed Woolworth Tower Residences and the relighting of the iconic tower. \nThe Woolworth Tower is a National Historic Landmark and has been an icon of the New York skyline since its completion in 1913 when\, at the time\, it was the world’s tallest building and unprecedented in both size and sophistication. Under the masterful direction of architect Thierry Despont with lighting design by SCHWINGHAMMER\, the top 30 floors of the tower have been reimagined as a stunning series of 33 luxury condominiums that embody the style and timeless elegance that we associate with the building. The interiors are complemented by an equally impressive relighting of the magnificent terra cotta facade\, revealing the building’s exquisite original details. \nStan Ponte of Sotheby’s will take us on a virtual tour of the exquisite $30 million “Pavilion A” apartment followed by a fascinating walk-through and discussion of the exterior lighting led by the SCHWINGHAMMER team. The evening will conclude with a live Q&A with SCHWINGHAMMER.

SUMMARY:Sustainable by Necessity: Daylighting a Remote School in Zambia
DESCRIPTION:In the harsh sun of the African savanna\, the Mwabwindo School had to be lit primarily by daylight because electricity was unreliable. Renfro Design Group’s award-winning solution utilizes inventive architectural interventions to harvest the more reliable light source. Informed by extensive daylight studies\, their design employs a handmade perforated brick wall to brighten corridors and bring daylight into the classrooms in conjunction with other elements including a dramatic center canopy with voids directing the sunlight. \nThe result\, despite the difficult conditions and limited budget\, is a learning environment that is not only comfortable but also friendly and stimulating. In its success\, the school has become a gathering area for the community. \nJoin us for a virtual tour and presentation followed by a Q&A with the designers.

SUMMARY:TWA Terminal and Hotel: Saarinen's Masterpiece Revived
DESCRIPTION:Join the DLFNY and IESNYC for an exciting evening. \nEero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK\, which epitomized the Jet Age\, and lay vacant since 2001\, reopened to the public on May 15\, 2019 as the highly anticipated TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport. Beyer Blinder Belle (BBB) played a central role in creating a second life for the historic building and as project and preservation architect\, restored and transformed the structure for MCR Development. One Lux Studio designed the lighting for what was the Flight Center and is now the hotel’s reception space in addition to the building exteriors\, being faithful to preserving Saarinen’s design\, while using updated fixtures. Flanking the terminal are the hotel’s two new wings\, designed by Lubrano Ciavarra with Stonehill Taylor providing the interior design for the guest rooms and lobbies. Below grade is a conference center\, designed by INC Architecture & Design\, that contains a a banquet hall and multiple meeting rooms. \nCooley Monato Studio designed the lighting for both the hotel and the event spaces\, keeping the spirit of ’60 alive for our modern age. The lighting designers from One Lux and Cooley Monato Studio will take the guests of the IESNYC and DLFNY on a tour of the restored and new spaces of one of New York’s iconic and much beloved buildings demonstrating how lighting contributed to this significant project.
