Sustainable by Necessity: Daylighting a Remote School in Zambia
October 21st, 2020
About the Event
In the harsh sun of the African savanna, the Mwabwindo School had to be lit primarily by daylight because electricity was unreliable. Renfro Design Group’s award-winning solution utilizes inventive architectural interventions to harvest the more reliable light source. Informed by extensive daylight studies, their design employs a handmade perforated brick wall to brighten corridors and bring daylight into the classrooms in conjunction with other elements including a dramatic center canopy with voids directing the sunlight.
The result, despite the difficult conditions and limited budget, is a learning environment that is not only comfortable but also friendly and stimulating. In its success, the school has become a gathering area for the community.
Join us for a virtual tour and presentation followed by a Q&A with the designers.
